April Learning Sessions: Strengthening Governance & HR Practices in Education
April 11, 2025 - AASHPI successfully conducted two back-to-back Learning Sessions that brought together over 160 HR professionals, school leaders, and educators to explore institutional governance and labor standards in academic settings.
Session 1: Management Rights & Discretion in Schools and Universities Led by Atty. Faustino Madriaga, the morning session provided a comprehensive overview of the legal framework surrounding management discretion in educational institutions. Participants gained key insights on balancing institutional authority with labor law compliance, employee rights, and ethical governance. Session 2: Handling the Contingent Workforce In the afternoon, Atty. Joseph “Erap” Estrada led a dynamic session on managing contingent workers in the academe. Attendees explored legal distinctions and ethical considerations related to part-time faculty, consultants, project-based staff, and retirees. The session emphasized compliance, fairness, and best practices in building a flexible yet lawful workforce. AASHPI, in collaboration with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), successfully conducted a complimentary webinar on February 7, 2025, titled "Mastering the Essentials: A Guide to Labor Standards 2025." The insightful session provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of key labor provisions and compliance strategies essential for HR practitioners and academic institutions.
Led by Engr. Brian Torres, Senior Labor and Employment Officer at DOLE, the session attracted over 200 participants eager to enhance their knowledge of workplace regulations, best HR practices, and labor law compliance. Through real-world case studies and expert guidance, attendees gained actionable insights to help them navigate evolving labor policies effectively. AASHPI recently concluded its highly anticipated 25th National Convention, marking a momentous celebration of 25 years of redefining HR excellence in the academic sector.
Held at the scenic Taal Vista Hotel, the event brought together over 165 HR practitioners, esteemed educators, industry experts, and thought leaders from across the Philippines and Asia to explore the evolving role of people in the era of Artificial Intelligence. More than a milestone, the convention reflected on AASHPI’s rich legacy and looked ahead to the future of HR in Philippine education.
The event opened with an inspiring Silver Anniversary Presentation and dance performance by the DLSU-Dasmariñas Lasallian Pointes N’ Flexes Dance Company, followed by a powerful keynote address from Archbishop Rex Andrew C. Alarcon, who underscored the irreplaceable human element in the age of AI.
A series of thought-provoking sessions followed, including:
One of the convention's highlights was the recognition of seven outstanding awardees, selected from a pool of 32 distinguished candidates representing institutions nationwide. This tribute honored individuals who exemplify excellence and dedication in the HR and education sectors.
Beyond the sessions, the event offered meaningful opportunities for networking, collaboration, and camaraderie, strengthening ties within the HR academic community.
Staying true to AASHPI tradition, the second day began with a heartfelt thanksgiving mass, officiated by Archbishop Rex Andrew Alarcon (Archbishop of the Diocese of Caceres and AASHPI Past President) and co-celebrated by Father Natoy Tampol (Region IV-A Chapter Vice President). This special mass marked a fitting tribute to AASHPI’s 25 years of unwavering service, excellence, and community spirit.

October Learning Sessions
Topic: "Job Ranking and Designing Compensation Schemes for Schools"
On October 11, 2024, AASHPI concluded its October Learning Sessions with a dynamic and practical whole-day session on “Job Ranking and Designing Compensation Structures for Schools,” facilitated by seasoned HR consultant Mr. Ruel Montenegro.
Held at the SISFU Multipurpose Hall in Las Piñas City, the session brought together HR professionals, school administrators, and education leaders eager to deepen their understanding of effective compensation management in the academic sector. Mr. Montenegro guided participants through the fundamentals and strategic approaches to job ranking, salary structuring, and performance-based compensation models tailored specifically for educational institutions. Through case studies, practical templates, and collaborative activities, attendees gained hands-on knowledge and actionable tools to implement fair, competitive, and sustainable compensation frameworks within their schools. The session emphasized aligning HR strategies with institutional goals to attract, motivate, and retain top talent. Participants left the session empowered with insights to transform their HR practices and strengthen their schools’ internal equity and employee engagement. On October 10, 2024, the Asian Association of School HRMP Practitioners, Inc. (AASHPI) successfully conducted two highly engaging and insightful sessions aimed at equipping educators and school administrators with critical legal and ethical updates relevant to the educational landscape.
The morning began with the hybrid session titled “Guide for Educators: Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers”, led by Atty. Joseph Noel “Erap” Estrada, Chief Legal Officer of EDCOM II. Participants, both onsite and online, gained a deeper understanding of the updated Code of Ethics, how it impacts educators' responsibilities, and the importance of aligning professional conduct with evolving regulatory standards. The session emphasized the role of ethics in protecting and empowering teaching professionals.
In the afternoon, Atty. Faustino Madriaga, Legal Counsel of Madriaga Law Office, facilitated an online session on “Preparing and Reviewing Student Manuals Including Emerging Issues on Inclusivity, Data Privacy, Use of AI, and New CHED/DepEd Guidelines.” The session provided timely insights into the development of compliant and inclusive student manuals that reflect current educational challenges, especially in the digital age.
